Which graphic tool for creating skins

Skinning Questions, Suggestions and Ideas

Postby MikeW » September 20th, 2009, 9:18 pm

Hi everyone

After I encountered problems with layer sets in Paint Shop Pro I tried out
Paint.NET (version 3.36 with PSD plugin)
Gimp (version 2.6.7)

Both programs can handle PSD files with layers, but both are NOT able to work with layer sets which are necessary for animations.

Yes, I did a search through the forum :), but I didn't find any help. :(

Which graphic tools do you use for skinning? Especially when using layer sets?

Thanks in advance for all your replies!

If not Photoshop, GIMP with the "GIMPshop" frontend is a good choice, and it's free. :)

Hi all

@cheesycrouton
No, I didn't find a solution. :(

@xonenine
No, GIMP is also not able to deal with 'layer sets'. GIMPshop is just a 'theme' giving GIMP the 'look' of Photoshop. It doesn't improve the features of GIMP. :(

Looks like GIMP 2.8 is finally adding support for layersets!

There's also some screenshots on the main page where you can see it working: http://meetthegimp.org/tag/28/

Looks like they're also moving to a single window style by default?

Cliff :)

Thanks so much for the info, Cliff!

Hopefully it won't take too long until version 2.8 will be released.

Let's wait and see... :)

I went and researched a little more for the people who have this problem.There is a GIMP layer group/subgroup plugin.I installed it and it adds alot of functionality but not what is needed here I think, although there might be a workaround.

Here is a link to the plugin (which does add some nice features like reverse group order and add effect to group) and instructions if anyone would like it:
