Making new skin

Skinning Questions, Suggestions and Ideas

Postby sl23 » April 17th, 2013, 10:38 pm

Hi, I'm interested in making a skin but can't find out how. I'm assuming the only way is via Photoshop? Can't another app be used? Seems strange that the only way to skin Xion is to purchase graphic software from Adobe???

I'm not a graphic designer or artist and just wanted to make a skin, I don't want to pay $100 for the privelege! Seems a bit restrictive. Any chance you could add support for other graphics programs?

Thanks
Scott

Welcome to the Xion Forums Scott

You can also use Gimp :) However it didn't have some of the required features for groups a while back, not sure if that's changed.

If you're serious about skinning and most of us are, then Photoshop is the tool to use, nothing else comes close. It's the industry standard! So you either have to like it or lump it ;)

Several apps listed here state support for .psd format.

Make sure you read some of this viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3124
Otherwise we will reject skins (if you publish them here) for you to fix ;)

:D Thanks for the quick replies.

I didn't think to look for alternatives to Photoshop, didn't occur to me there would be any! I'll take a look.

Thanks again :D

The draft SLoB linked to is deprecated. You will see the guidelines during skin submission and can review the requirements then.
I shoot and ask questions later.

Take no offense of it.

Ah cool, thanks logokas, couldn't find an up-to-date link as I would have used that, we should have a link rather than at the submission stage so skinners are aware of things before they even get to the submission stage. This way it will help speed up both the skinners and moderators tasks.

A link in the skin tutorial page might be worthwhile.

FYI: The skin guidelines are now available at: http://www.xion.r2.com.au/page/help/top ... Guidelines

You can get to them from the Help Page.

I forgot Adobe have released their Creative Suite CS2 out to the public for free. You need to sign up to Adobe but the whole lot is free, so definitely is worth looking at ;)
