Gaming/Ventrilo feature

I know that I'm not the only person on these forums who is a PC gamer, or that uses the ventrilo client to communicate with the people you play games with. :D

So the feature I want to request is that when someone opens their microphone, or when you open your mic your music is turned down to a certain % so you're better able to hear them or think more clearly when you're trying to speak.

I like to listen to music while I play games, but not being able to hear people when I'm playing is so detrimental that I'm not able to do so very often. :(

Does Ventrillo have some sort of API that I can interact with to know when you're using press to talk?

If not, I'm not sure how I would detect this.

I don't see a setting for such a feature in ventrilo, so i'm guessing it's either possible with a ventrilo plugin ( If such even exist ), or you need to go around some other way.

I know Windows 7 has a feature that tones down music and other sounds when an incoming call is detected, but i have no idea how it works. Though it DOES work with Skype. I guess that's as good a place to start as any.

There was a tiny open source program that did this before, but I don't think it's been updated for a while, and doesn't work for me. I'm not sure if this will help you? :P

Oh! Perfect!

I'll look into the source code and convert it to a Xion plugin :D

Well, there are plenty of other things I need to do first, but now that I have the source, I'll be able to do something. Look for an announcement in the future.

Sorry to resurrect an old topic but the preventrilo site has disappeared and this is exactly what I've been looking for. Could anyone who has the program re-upload to rapidshare or something for me? Thanks in advance.

Or if this feature will be added to Xion soon?

I know Windows 7 can dim the volume of things when windows detects communications activity, check the Sound properties on the Communications tab.

Image Not sure if it works with Ventrilo, I don't have a server to test it with at the moment.

Stumbled upon the source for this again, someone may find it useful: http://sourceforge.net/projects/preventrilo/files/

I'm still hopeful this will be implemented in the future.

I have to conclude that this is not required.

Mumble has a feature that does exactly this, and actually manages all Windows sounds on its' own.

This is more a feature required of the VoIP client than a music player. I usually leave Xion playing at 10% volume in the background while I talk to people on Mumble, and it operates perfectly.

The fact that Ventrilo doesn't have such a feature is pretty bad on their part, but they ARE a pretty old VoIP business anyway. Mumble is by far the more feature complete product at this stage.

But yes, safe to conclude that this is not something that should be focused on by Xion.
