Definately just a Vista and above problem.

Its microsoft anyway, they are evil :) In Windows 7 they have taken the Windows Media Player Toolbar completely out of Windows Media Player 12. so no more play / pause buttons actually directly on your taskbar.

As far as i know, that is just disabled by default.

Or maybe i'm just hallucinating. it's not like i run 7 every day. Waiting for RC, actually.

No, only way to get it back is to effectively disable a service, own a few files, change them, install WMP 11, and do a small irish jig in front of your PC. Then you can get the toolbar :)

Yea Im looking forward to the RC of Win 7, the 7000 build is really nice, its like Vista - but with the speed of XP.
