For some odd reason, Xion isn't working.

The tray icon is showing, but no main player window. I can't even get the right click menu to show.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but it's a no go.

Send me your Settings.dat (default location is C:\progam files\r2 studios\Xion\Settings.dat) file so that I can have a look. It's possible that it tried to load a skin it coulldn't find and is now locked? (although there is code in place to stop this).

When you uninstall, make sure that the Xion directory is gone as well as the settings.dat file has all of the setup information and may have something which is causing the problem (but send a copy to me first!)

Other than that, try a reboot, perhaps something has happened to your sound drivers?

Well I tell ya Cliff, don't know what it was. I didn't even have to reboot.

For some od reason, I had Messenger 8.1 running in the background but no window was attached to the process (dead app).. anywho, I killed that and Xion's window popped up.

Not sure if that was the problem, and I doubt it was, but it did the trick.

I know it wasn't a sound card issue as I disabled play on load. I would think it would be a problem if Xion was attempting to play a song on faulty drivers. I can say the KX driver I use for my Audigy has never had any issues that would do that.. ;) yet :p

I do wish I could pin point the problem and solution better, in case some one else ran into the problem. but I think I would need some sort of debug version or unless there's a way to get debug info in a command window with this build.

I do have MS's development studio with full debugging enabled on my machine, so if you need some type of tests in that area, let me know.

Hi Nightbreed,

Thanks for the offer of debugging that could come in handy later :)

I actually think I know what the problem might be. Xion actually supports integration with MSN so that if you turn on the 'What I'm listening to" feature in MSN, Xion will feed it the song information that you are listening to. It is possible it hung because it was waiting for MSN to respond to the message it had sent (The message would have been sent, waiting for a reply, before it could continue)

Let me know if this is a common occurance and i'll see what I can do about working around it.

That probably was the problem. Perhaps my msn was hanging and Xion was trying to communicate with it and couldn't?

Is there a way to make Xion detect that kind of situation and act accordingly? Either that or make that an option for disabling that?

I beta test MS's Live products so it would be cool to have control over that feature in case I get an even buggier version of Messenger :).

I did get an idea that it was Messenger when Live Mail Desktop wouldn't start up properly. So, I would say that the problem I had could be narrowed down to the messenger thing.

I'm not aware of any way to detect a hung application. I can think of a couple of work arounds for it, but nothing that is a rock solid solution.

Unfortunately its actually documented that if you send a message to a hung program, yours will hang too. How nice is that? ;)

Well, I posted the situtation with Messenger to Microsoft. Appears to be a common problem with the app. I don't however know when it's going to be fixed. But, least they know about it :) lol
