Photoshop CS6 issue with long layer names + fix

Skinning Questions, Suggestions and Ideas

Postby Lance » March 4th, 2013, 2:56 pm

This only applies to Photoshop CS6.

As Xion skinners, we often need to create layer names much longer than the standard character limit when renaming inside the Layers panel. To do this, we used to right click the layer and select 'Layer Properties' allowing us to enter a much longer 256 character layer name.

However, the 'Layer Properties' window no longer exists in CS6, thus no way of accessing it (whether via Layer > Layer Properties, right clicking the layer, or alt+double clicking the layer.) It simply doesn't exist any more.

So after panicking for a while, I figured out two ways you can still create longer names. The first is to use 'Duplicate Layer' which will pop up a dialog in which you can create longer names, then of course delete your old layer. The second option is to create a new layer, which also has the ability for long names in the dialog box, then merge the blank layer with your existing one.

It's a complete ball ache having to do this every time you want to change one thing in the layer name, but we have no choice. They have removed the Layer and Group properties window as they are now aiming to make more use of the 'Properties' panel by adding in relevant controls for the selected layer. This doesn't yet include renaming...

Anyways, figured I'd give you a heads up since no doubt you'll encounter it sooner or later when skinning complex functions.

Peace, Lance

Have Adobe fixed their shitty text renderer yet in CS6? I'm loathe to splash out on a new one if they haven't at least fixed that. That's one of my biggest issues against PS. I suspect it costs too much for a licence for it, browsers can render small text very sharply yet PS is so cack on this aspect for many versions.

There's a third solution.

Don't use CS6.
I shoot and ask questions later.

Take no offense of it.

Sooo... that's pretty terrible.

Therefore, I opened the Photoshop Scripting app and peeked around and I managed to come up with a script that will replace that dialog. You can use it in CS5 and CS6. Maybe other versions, I'm not sure.

Grab the Script from: http://www.xionplayer.com/photoshop/RenameLayer.zip

This script allows you to Rename the selected layer. It'll show a large text box allowing you to actually see your entire keyword label without having to scroll it around either!

If it can't change the name of the layer (for whatever reason) it'll fall back on duplicating and then renaming the layer, deleting the old layer for you.

I'm not really going to support this, I just whipped it up to fill in the hole that Adobe left.

The Script file .jsx is in that .zip file. You'll need to extract it. You can then either double click it to run once off, or else you can install it in your Scripts folder. For info on that, see here: http://morris-photographics.com/photosh ... ting1.html

Once installed you can run it from the File->Scripts menu item or you can bind it into an action by recording an action and using the Script. You can then probably bind the Action to a hot key.

Have fun!

Cliff :)
