Xion Audio Player

Playing midi files

General Discussion about Xion Audio Player

Postby Keith Logan » November 12th, 2008, 7:22 am

Hello,

I only discovered this program yesterday and am impressed by the sound quality on mp3 files. This player seems to my ears, to be superior to the other main players using bass as the core (xmplay and AIMP2). However I am wondering whether midi playback has been fully implemented yet. I have a large range of midis that I enjoy, including a number of converted piano rolls. I also have several gm soundfonts as well as individual pianos. At the moment I think AIMP2 has the edge over xmplay in reproducing a natural sound but considering that Xion does better on mp3s I would be curious to hear what it might make of midi reproduction. If I have missed something and it can already play these files, a hint as to how this might be achieved would be much appreciated.

Hi Keith and welcome to the Xion Community!

Xion doesn't currently support sound fonts, however it should be able to play .midi files. If you are having difficulties, could you send me a couple of midi files and the sound font file and I'll look at implementing it?

Thanks,
Cliff :)

Cliff,

I see the midi file playing. Well the file name scrolls and the time counts up correctly. Only there is no sound. Should the sound file built into windows xp be invoked (as it is with windows media player)?

I don't know how to upload files here but I can tell you some of the soundfonts I use and offer a couple of sources of good mids

ChoriumRevA.SF2 the soundfont supplied by both xmplay and AIMP2 is 27.5Mb, this is the xmplay download http://support.xmplay.com/file.php?star ... =date_desc
SGM-V2.01 is 235Mb http://www.geocities.jp/shansoundfont/
GeneralUserGS_1.4 is 29.9Mb http://www.sccmusic.250x.com/
4gmgsmt.sf2 (Creative's old 4Mb soundfont) available from Sf2Midi.com http://www.sf2midi.com/index.php

Which version of Windows would this be on?

Also which sound card are you using?

Cliff,

I'm using Windows XP Home Edition with service pack 3 and the sound is Realtek AC97 Audio (with high definition drivers), built into the motherboard.

ps. I don't use a 5.1 p.c. speaker system, preferring instead a Kenwood HiFi Stereo unit with proper speakers.

I've been able to reproduce this on a Virtual machine so I'll look into getting it fixed soon :)
