The idea behind this part of the forum is to trial an idea I've had for a while now, it is aimed at every skinner on the forum if they are interested in learning more about design, design aspects/principles and implementation of such ideas into Xion skins.
In the next coming few weeks I will put together an idea for a few initial threads on design principles and a first workshop idea, this will involve YOU the skinner taking part in the discussions and the workshop.
I want the threads to be discussion based rather than just one liners etc.. so that we can all learn something from the threads/ideas in order to help further the quest for making killer UI's, for example we might pull something from a reference based on some control positioning and discuss the pro's/con's/merrits of that so we can implement this practice into a workshop idea.
I'm not a teacher nor do I pretend to be one but I do want to learn more about design and I think that most skinners here would also like to learn more regarding this topic
The idea is so those that are interested can learn as a group with a common interest and be part of a community that is more than just posting skins but about design itself and how we can get those ideas/principles into Xion skins, of course other apps will have similar design aspects but this is going to be geared towards Xion as the potential is enormous.
I posted a poll in the general skin section so that I can get a rough idea of how many would be interested, it will involve a bit more interaction than just a normal forum thread, to work as a team on an idea etc... with the emphasis on working together rather than as individuals
I'm a little confused about exactly what you intend (cuz I'm dense) but I like to help folks when I can...I will keep an eye on this thread and watch for ways to participate.
User Interface design is very difficult to talk about across the web especially on a topic so centered as media players. Unless you were to provide a visual workthrough or perhaps a video demonstration I don't see how you could reach your audience in the way you need. What makes it more difficult is that most of the people skinning haven't learned the basic principles of design or even the essential visual "rules" of what we see (colour theory, linear perspective or even logical shading) on a daily basis. Creating tutorials on those notions are completely worthless as there are already billions of them everywhere. The problem with those tutorials is that they're easy to skim across and nobody is actually by your side working with you to comprehend what you're learning as it would be in a studio.
I'm not trying to write my art manifesto, just some things to consider. I can help a lot with people understanding typography and its role in information delivery as well as ease-of-use both on the users' and designer's side (since all I do now is type-stuff). Let's hope it's fun, because if it isn't...then it sucks. /SUPERSRS POST LOL
I hear you skry
I've not had much time recently to even get any tutorial stuff down, but your right there is a lot of stuff out there, but i think a small bunch here would appreciate some discussions on such matters, was not going to go with a lot of info as we tend to skip things, basic design principles, rules, workflow, techniques should be looked at to get something going, I was going for specifics rather than general as there would be more interest in particulars than general
Its meant for discussion rather than me just spouting stuff off and others reading, was to try and generate more of a community effort to improve upon what we know and don't know
I would do this in a heart beat...... that is .. if i knew more about the "scripting" aspect, and its possibilities. As for the art and design, i thing that would be a blast to work on with other people, and i guess i can learn from them and their methods of "scripting"
Very respectfully,
