Plugins. Are they still needed?

Yes I think plugins are essential.

No I never use them.

I use them, but only because the functionality doesn't exist in the default player.

Hi!

So I've been doing some further development on Xion.

One of the things I've done is to merge all the existing Default plugins back into the Core of Xion. So Default Library, Default Interface, Default Playlist, etc that you currently see in the Plugins window. This allows me to pull all the functionality back into a more manageable state so that I can do things like integrate the Playlist into the Main window. Excellent.

So the question I have, what is everyone's opinion on Plugins? Are they a requirement for an Audio Player? Right now on the Plugins page there are 2 plugins. Both written by me. No one has taken the SDK to build anything else. Do people bother with plugins for Audio players?

Please answer the poll so I can get an idea of where to go.

Some of you may be using plugins simply for their functionality. I.e. the Last.fm scrobbler.

If you vote, please reply with a comment if you feel you can elaborate and give me some reasons why/why not.

Thanks!
Cliff :)

From a general standpoint, some people use plugins like SRS and other audio enhancements, and would probably be very upset if they were not compatible.

As for the default plugins, i see no reason why they shouldn't simply be integrated fully, since there has been no need for alternatives, yet.
I shoot and ask questions later.

Take no offense of it.

Well, why even have them as plugins. SRS, etc could just be included in the Xion package.

Is there a compelling reason to have a plugins page so you can add SRS support?

i can't imagine a worthwhile player NOT using plugins, for reasons you've already stated. (options 1 and 3 are tied together - plugins are essential because you can't put all possible functionality in the player.)

Well that's why I'm asking. There's a lot of software out there that supports plugins. Of that software that you use, how many do you actually need to download and use plugins for?

What I'm getting at is that it might actually be better for me to just build the support into the player as I'm the only one developing this.

Not supporting plugins makes it easier and faster for me to add new features. This is the reason I'm asking.

If you throw everything into the base player, the bloatfest will become terrible. I for one care very little about last.fm scrobblers and whatnot, and the less things i see in xion that i don't need, the better.

I would suggest a middle ground. Merge the basic plugins into the player, keep the rest as is.

I'll second that. Any feature that's not a "Default" can be a plugin.
