The Bigger Picture

So forget media player skinning. If Xion supported a few other features, it could be the base of a pretty sweet little program to power programs. For example, right now I'm considering creating an interactive tour of a summer camp that I'm affiliated with using xion. The different interfaces are like different web pages. Hopefully, I will be able to install xion on a CD, and add an autoplay file so that when someone pops the CD in their computer, the tour comes up. I wish you could add hyperlinks to buttons.
That would get incredibly annoying. I don't want to load up a skin, go to click the play button, and have gay porn flashing all over my monitor as my little nephew asks what a 'reacharound' is. In short, it's way too exploitable, especially by spammers.
There's no reason why I couldn't adapt the Xion skinning engine to other applications that would allow users to create brochures and such.
Once I get net back, I will have to have a look at this as it sounds like a good idea and would mean I could re-use the Xion skin engine in another useful way. Thanks for the idea, Cliff ![]()
Going by that logic, I could make an innappropriate picture pop up when you click the play button right now. These things get reviewed before they are put on the skins page ya know... ![]()
Not on Deviantart.
I actually have exploited skinning engines just like that - not on Xion, Winamp - my point still stands. A button capable of directing the user to a url is more susceptible to various ActiveX controls (not everyone uses a third party browser) and/or malware ad revenue generating pseudo sites. I don't think Cliff would appreciate people making money from his program, but that's just my logic.
I don't think I'll be adding support for URLs to Xion. I don't really see the point other than perhaps going to the author's website, but that can be done differently anyway. If I were to make a completely different application that would support showcasing, etc then I don't see any reason not to allow it. Cliff ![]()
